State Standard

Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.

Explanation of Standard:

Explain the persuasive force grammar has when writing or speaking. Essentially, using better grammar to get the point across.

Explanation of Mastery:

There was a research paper that was assigned earlier in the year. The goal of the assignment was to get your point across and to place the paper in a third person, MLA Format.  The MLA format was used to limit word choice, therefore making the paper better because of the well thought out grammar.

State Standard

Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grades 9-10 topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.

Explanation of Standard:

Talk to a peer often two in a group with different partners. Discuss uncommon and common beliefs with each other to clearly persuade the other.

Explanation of Mastery:

My partner and I discussed multiple Shakespearean plays, like ‘The Tempest’. We brought a new light, along with more information to each other. After the discussion of the plays we were to use our own, and our partners ideas to create a  small passage explaining the mirroring events between two plays.

State Standard

Write routinely over extended time frames and shorter time frames for a range of tasks, purposes, and audiences.

Explanation of Standard:

Write on schedule over the school year with varying times, tasks, purposes, and audiences.

Explanation of Mastery:

I was given 45 minutes to write a full essay on how arranged marriages worked and the culture behind them. My opinion changed, along with my audience. Each different topic i was given different points to explain and a set amount to write.

State Standard

Analyze various accounts of a subject told in different mediums, determining which details are emphasized in each account.

Explanation of Standard:

Comprehend, compare, and contrast differences between texts and world. Explain how the connections have similar structures.

Explanation of Mastery:  I was told to find actual ‘Family Feuds’ similar to the ones in ‘Romeo and Juliet’. There were several different stories in which they often killed each other and the conflicts were never resolved.

State Standard

Analyze how an author draws on and transforms source material in a specific work.

Explanation of Standard:

Explain how the author got their inspiration and made that into a work of their own

Explanation of Mastery:

After reading Shakespeare, I was told to find a story of Shakespeare and then find another story that mirrors Shakespeare. I chose ‘Gnomeo and Juliet’. In that,I explained how the two stories were paralleled.
